ATTENDANCE
Participation in class is necessary to achieve the course objectives. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to participate in all activities. Please mute cell phones prior to class.

Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. Students are considered tardy if they arrive after roll is taken. Students are permitted two absences without penalty; additional absences will reduce the final grade by one letter grade per occurrence. Three “tardies” will equal one absence.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE (*schedule is subject to change at discretion of instructor)

August 28th
-Review syllabus and studio rules.
-Health and Safety Overview
-Explain class blog.

Assignment: Shoot 200 images of anything and familiarize yourself with the Class Blog. 

September 4th
-Basic camera functions and shooting: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, shooting modes (M, Ap, Sp, Auto) JPEG vs. RAW, bracketing.
-Preparing contact sheets, processing images to post on blog.
-Art Criticism

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images of anything, post contact sheets of this week’s and last week’s images on Class Blog as well as your 10 best images.


September 11th
-Basic Photoshop techniques: RAW Processing, B&W conversion methods, Crossovers from Adobe Bridge, Color Space, Color Mode, Soft Proofing
-Basic Photoshop techniques: Non-Destructive Workflow, Adjustment Layers, Masking, Spotting, and Rendering Intent
-Camera Operation: Depth of Field, Focus, Emphasis on lens difference

Assignment: 
-Utilizing the range of depth of field possibilities, experiment and shoot 200 images of anything.
-Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include at least one example of shallow, mid, and deep depth of field.
-Make 4 comments (one for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on a peers work on Class Blog.

September 18th
-PRINTING DEMO:
-Camera Operation: Motion: Stop Motion, Blurred Motion, Panning
-Understanding the aperture/shutter relationship

Assignment: 
-Utilizing motion techniques discussed during class, experiment and shoot 200 images of anything.
-Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include at least one example of stop motion, blurred motion and panning
-Make 4 comments (one for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on a peers work on Class Blog.
-Print 8-10 of your best images thus far to be critiqued on 2/6.

September 25th
Crit #1 – Projected Presentation/ Printing Demonstration
Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 8 comments (2 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 2 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.


October 2nd
-CLASS DEMO: Compositional Elements
-Discuss basic composition techniques and various photographic ideas (Isolating the subject, horizontal vs vertical, symmetry, subject in center, rule of thirds, power of line [horizon placement, using line to create depth], patterns and textures, quality of light [shoot at 4 different times of the day], shutter speed and aperture control).
-Discuss final project proposal
 

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include images exposed at morning, afternoon, evening and night
-Make 8 comments (2 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 2 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.


October 9th
-CLASS DEMO: Advanced Editing: Sharpening, Perspective Correction, etc

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 8 comments (2 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 2 of your peer’s works on Class Blog. Use these comments and thoughts to generate discussion for next week’s critique. -Print 10-12 of your best new images to be critiqued on 10/16.


October 16th
Crit #2

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 12 comments (3 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 3 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.

October 23rd
-CLASS DEMO: Elements of Portraiture
-Walking Photo Field Trip

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 12 comments (3 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 3 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.
-Photographer Review:  Check out a photography monograph from Architecture and Fine Arts Library. Write a one-page review. **Due in class on October 30th.


October 30th
-Photobook Presentation Due

November 6th
No Class – Homecoming

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. 
 -Make 12 comments (3 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 3 of your peer’s works on Class Blog. Use these comments and thoughts to generate discussion for next week’s critique. 
-Print 10-12 of your best new images to be critiqued on 11/13.

November 13th
Crit #3

Assignment: 
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 12 comments (3 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 3 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.

November 20th 
-Individual Meetings – Bring 500 word statement outlining the concept of your final portfolio
-Printing & Editing Work Day

Assignment: 
-Finalize your portfolio of 36 images and formulate a plan/sequence of images for final portfolio. Post these images on the Class Blog.  Images must be on Class Blog no later than Wednesday prior to critique.  Make 12 comments (same directions as usual)

November 27th
No class – Holiday-
Assignment: 
-Work on final portfolio

Dec 4TH FINAL PORTFOLIO DUE!!!
Final portfolio of 36 prints DUE
-4th Crit
